We have been serving authentic Teochew cuisine since
1969. We started from an outlet on the pavement of a coffee shop in Wayang
Street. With the need for increased space we moved to Ellenborough Market
in the Teochew heartland. In 1988 we had the chance to have an open-air restaurant, which could cater to diners in the evening. This was in what was then known as Happy World in Geylang. We were there till 1993. During that time, conservation of Chinatown buildings was in full swing and we saw an opportunity to move up-market as our reputation for Teochew cuisine had grown and we had a faithful clientele that had followed us wherever we were. We felt that with growing prosperity there were also clients who wanted authentic Teochew cuisine but in a more congenial atmosphere with air-conditioning and ambience. We made the move to Amoy Street in 1993. As business prospered we felt that a better financial infrastructure had to be in place to cater for expansion. Huat Kee Teochew Restaurant, which had all the while been a family partnership, was converted into Teochew Restaurant Huat Kee (1998) Pte. Ltd. We have now fulfilled our dream of owning our premises and have bought 74 Amoy Street, making it our flagship restaurant, and adding 73 Amoy Street to expand the ground floor. Our mission, as always, is to serve the best Teochew cuisine and at the same time to give our customers good value for their money. |
